What is Endodontics?

Endodontics is a speciality of dentistry that focuses on treating the inside of the tooth, specifically the pulp tissue, which is the soft tissue located in the centre of the tooth. This tissue contains nerves and blood vessels that, when inflamed or infected, can cause significant pain and discomfort. The goal of endodontic treatment is to remove the infection and inflamed tissue, clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth, and then seal it to prevent future infection.

When is Endodontics necessary?

Endodontic treatment is necessary when the pulp tissue of the tooth is affected by infection, deep decay, trauma or fracture. Some of the most common symptoms that indicate the need for root canal treatment include:

If you experience any of these symptoms, it is crucial to seek dental care immediately. Endodontics can save the affected tooth and relieve pain, preventing further complications and the need for tooth extraction.

Endodontic Procedure

The endodontic procedure is usually performed in one or two visits, depending on the complexity of the case. At Nordic Dental Centre, we make sure that the treatment is as comfortable as possible for our patients, using local anesthesia and advanced techniques. Below, we describe the main stages of treatment:

01. Diagnosis and Evaluation

The process begins with a detailed assessment of the affected tooth. This includes a clinical examination and x-rays to determine the extent of the damage or infection. Based on these results, we develop a personalised treatment plan.

02. Access and Cleaning

Once the tooth is anaesthetised, the dentist makes a small opening in the crown of the tooth to access the infected or damaged pulp. The pulp tissue is then removed along with any remaining nerves and blood vessels. The space inside, known as the root canal, is carefully cleaned and disinfected to remove any bacteria.

03. Filling and Sealing

After the root canals are cleaned and disinfected, they are filled with a biocompatible material, usually gutta-percha, which helps seal the space and prevent future infection. In some cases, a medication is placed inside the tooth to fight infection before it is permanently sealed.

04. Tooth Restoration

The final step in endodontic treatment is to restore the tooth to its form and function. This may involve the placement of a crown or filling to reinforce the tooth structure and protect it from future damage. At Nordic Dental Centre, we use high quality materials that not only restore the functionality of the tooth but also ensure a natural aesthetic appearance.

Benefits of Endodontics

Opting for endodontic treatment has several significant benefits:

The treatment eliminates infection or inflammation in the tooth, providing immediate relief from pain and discomfort.

Endodontics allows the affected tooth to be saved, avoiding the need for extraction and maintaining the natural alignment and function of the mouth.

By sealing and protecting the treated tooth, endodontics prevents reinfection and possible complications.

Commitment to your Oral Health

At Nordic Dental Centre, we are committed to providing quality and comprehensive dental care. Our team of endodontic specialists uses advanced technology and safe practices to ensure that every treatment is effective and comfortable. We understand the importance of keeping your natural teeth and we work hard to save them whenever possible.

Aftercare and Recovery

After endodontic treatment, it is normal to experience some sensitivity, which usually disappears within a few days. It is crucial to follow the aftercare instructions provided by our dentists to ensure a full recovery and avoid future problems. This includes maintaining good oral hygiene, avoiding chewing hard foods with the treated tooth and attending regular check-ups.
